Education opinions

All,

I am ashamed to say that I have not kept up with the latest and
greatest that our platform has to offer. I am your basic COBOL/RPG/SQL
guy. That said, I have committed (to myself) to learn some new things. I
am considering Java and/or dot net. Should I learn one before the other?
Do you have any suggestions as to books to learn from?

Any other advice as to new topics/things to learn would be much
appreciated.
