I'm torn a few ways on this.
First, I'm not seeing Windows servers being so darn unreliable as they
were decades ago. Perhaps it's because our shop is different. The
Windows servers are all running on the big box with SAN storage,
replicated remotely, with flash capability and all. My boss is concerned
that if he ever added SAN storage for our Power servers (mix of AIX, IBM
i, VIOS) that the costs would skyrocket. Due to limited choices of SAN,
IBM charging all sorts of extra fees for maintenance just because you have
SAN and that implies your pockets are infinitely deep, etc.
Second, I just spent several hours during the day with unplanned outage on
a Power 8 serving up two lpars of VIOS and 5 lpars of IBM i. All caused
by a simple dynamic lpar attempt. And I do dynamic lpar on an
intermittent basis (just did some earlier that day on this same server).
So don't give me this "wouldn't have happened if I wasn't running Windows
garbage".
