Yeah, IBM is thinking to use the open-source options instead. Not a bad direction, methinks.

Still, there are some tools in PTL that probably - I don't know for sure - probably are not available through the PERZL and other AIX repositories - some ATK editors and the like - (ATK is Andrew Tool Kit, some IBM-developed tools for a project they did, maybe long in the tooth).

emacs is available in PTL, but that is probably available through PERZL, etc.

I think it doesn't hurt to download it and have it all. OTOH, it might be confusing if one is starting out with open source, to have stuff like emacs in different places in PASE.

You pays no money and you still makes your choice!

It would be nice to have a map of what is recommended to use instead of individual utilities in PTL. Maybe it's already out there, I've not tried to find it.
