True about those regulations. Although I find it quite conflicting that
they would make it so hard to get an upgrade approved while at the same
time failing your audit because you are not on approved ciphers (and other
examples of obsolescence).

And those landmines are important. It's amazing the number of people who
either fail to read the Memo To Users or choose to interpret it as "they
can't really mean that". And sometimes experience does really pay off.
Like the SMB2 support issues being applied to you with the force of a 2x2
to your forehead. Or "hey this release is supported on Power 6". Maybe,
but at least in our case we would have had to remove just about every card
in it and definitely every disk drive due to the expansion units they were
in.

I don't upgrade the OS on my PC. I turn it into the techs and have them
do it. But normally those people do such a great job with things like
"Rob, how'd you like a new laptop with a better processor, more memory and
SSD and the latest OS?" that I never ever say no. And, judging by some of
the questions on this list, some of these people shouldn't be doing their
own upgrades. But we try to help those too.
