I don't think it's that they don't "want" to act as a client. Most
programmers that now also wearing the sysop hat simply don't do enough
networking to understand the proper way to do things.

That is in no way a slam to anyone anywhere. I was in the same boat and
because of the software I made was forced to learn things the hard way as
well. But what I have seen over the years, especially the past 10 or so
now that shops are realizing they can communicate with the outside world
with their IBM i to do some pretty neat stuff.

Shops may not want an IBM i server to act as a TCP/IP client (FTP, HTTP,
SMTP, etc.). But that seems rather rigid - like back to the dark ages ;-)
