To answer my own question :-)

Changing the timeout settings in my ftp client from 20 seconds to 40
seconds did help. Hopefully that is not a forecast for the download
speed....

However when I login to IBM's ftp server it says:
Connection established, waiting for welcome message...
Error: Connection timed out after 20 seconds of inactivity

Anybody experiencing the same?
