Kevin has already posted some working examples for generating .xlsx
and .csv using Python.

I posted an example similar to Kevin's for .xlsx, but a little denser
(specifically to try to get the line count down) and with
iSeriesPython instead of IBM's Python for PASE:

My example is somewhat annotated to try to explain what's happening,
but it's probably still kind of a throw-you-into-the-pool experience
rather than a gentler introduction. (Well, it's hard for me to judge,
since it's been a long time since I was completely unfamiliar with
Python. I will say it is probably gentler if you read it slower, and
read it again a few times. ;)

There are many Python tutorials and other learning materials on the
Web and in print. Personally, I like the one that comes with the
"official" Python, at python.org.
