Have you had any luck with reverse proxy and a mix of HTTP and HTTPS? I
tried setting things up for HTTPS in my reverse proxy but it didn't seem to
take.

my one reverse proxy instance on Apache. Then the dozen or so other Apache

It's so simple that I can add and drop hosts and domains on a regular
basis as I experiment.
