yah, i think the 2729 was the issue. I did not go deep into this as 30 disks were ok for me at that time ;-)
There is so much old boxes still waiting to play around with and no time at all...

The problem most likely was that you cannot mix that third RAID card with a 2729 SCSI tape card.
