It has a CD-ROM drive and an MLR1 QIC 5010-DC 1/4" tape cartridge
drive. I own precisely one tape cartridge - an MLR1-26GB.

I'll take whatever I can get, though I assume that CD-ROMs would be
cheaper and easier.

What kind of media would you be booting from (I don't remember 170's)? CD,

Yes, I was expecting different keys. At this point, my hope is that
the problem is that a couple of drives have been robbed from the
expansion chassis, but to confirm that I have to be in the DST. If I'm
very lucky, that will be a separate array which I can stop, allowing
me to IPL from the array in the main chassis and recover the license
keys for the "toast" box as well.

The DSPLICKEY is tied to the serial number. If you have two of these

new keys,
talk to the previous owners and get their keys (?legal?),
revert it back to something prior to V5 and the whole 'key' concept.

Thanks for the replies, folks.

I did buy them, but I didn't spend much and it is hobbying around.

The one that IPLs is running V5R2 - I don't have a printer hooked up
to it, so for now I used DSPLICKEY to the screen and paged through it,
photographing each one. It's not ideal, but it's better than nothing.

I'm not sure how much more I can do with it, though. I can only log in
as QSRV - whoever had it last changed the QSECOFR passwords in both
places, so I don't have as many permissions as I'd like. I do have a
PC with some IBM software that looks like it was supposed to connect
to it, so I might dig out a hub and see if I can get them talking.

On the one that won't IPL, 27409021 appears to translate to: "Array
not functional due to present hardware configuration. Perform
“SDIOP-PIP20” on page 618". That refers to "missing devices" and, sure
enough, this machine has only one drive in the expansion chassis, as
opposed to three in the other one. So, I wouldn't be at all surprised
if that turned out to be the problem.

First, though, I need to find media. As previously stated, a D IPL is
the only thing that I can do. Amazingly, there's none to be had on
ebay!
