There is one major caveat (hardware wise). While the 'processor' may
support it there are certain cards, disk enclosures, expansion units, etc
which may not. For example, our old Power 6 could have ran 7.2 if we had
stripped out all the disk drives, expansion units, I/O cards, etc.
Basically an impossibility to us so we upgraded to Power 8's. These
restrictions are covered. You may have to read:
- multiple Memo To Users (ie: If you're going from V5R4 to 7.1 read both
the 6.1 and the 7.1 MTU.
- The "Upgrade Planning" stuff for each release at
http://www-947.ibm.com/systems/support/i/planning/upgrade/index.html
I recommend being at the highest release that your hardware supports. This
will ease future migrations.
Then there's the usual stuff about checking your vendor sofware, reading
the MTU's for software compatibility issues, etc.
