Multimember files exist in the SQL world.
Member = Partition.
In DB2 for IBM i they require you sell your first born male child to pony
up the money for DB2 MultiSystem (even if you only plan on running it on a
single system).

ALTER TABLE ... DROP PARTITION ...

Partitioning will allow you to auto select which member to put data in.
For example, if you have a column called TransactionDate you can partition
by year of TransactionDate.

With multi system you can partition by geography and keep different
partitions on different systems. For example partition by warehouse and
have warehouses have their own IBM i.

I don't use it because I don't do the geography thing and I won't pay the
cost of it for a single system use.

IBM is really hoping that Temporal Tables helps drive the acceptance of
it. Any slide with Temporal Tables has partitioned tables. It's really
not needed though.
