Rob,

How much disk space does your virtual tape take?
How many days of save do you keep?

Paul

And none of these commands actually required the physical media. All this cataloging is stored on disk. And since I am using the networking function of BRMS I actually checked this on a system 17 miles away from the tape drive that neither did the original save to virtual tape, nor the dupmedbrm of the ftp'd virtual image catalog. So, if one system takes it in the shorts I can still find the data needed to restore it on any other lpar.

Definitely sounds like an Opportunity For Adventure! :)

I agree, though, that working within BRM along the lines Rob suggests is
better than not.

Rob and Joe,

There may be another advantage to Rob's method.
If you ever do the command, WRKMEDIBRM LIB(Library that was saved with a
savf) these saves do NOT appear.

I like Rob's idea and approach, I'm going to test this out.

WRKMEDIBRM LIB(Library that was saved with a virtual volume) these saves
I believe will appear.

Also, I wonder if you could RSTLIBRM from the virtual volume remotely
across LPARs.
If so, no need to FTP the virtual.

Paul's reply is certainly valid. I've just gotten more used to virtual
tape since I can store multiple libraries, directories, etc on it versus
save files.

Thanks, Paul.

This is what I'd like to do, because I can then send the save file to
another machine to do a refresh. Rob's virtual volume approach seems
more "BRMS-y" but I'm not sure it will allow me to do what I need.

Yes, we use this process for a single application save, don't need to
worry if the tape library is available.
We then save the savf to media at a later time.

1) SAVLIBBRM LIB(CABPRDF) DEV(*MEDCLS) MEDPCY(SAVF) +
SAVACT(*LIB) SAVACTMSGQ(QSYSOPR) +
OBJDTL(*YES) SAVTYPE(*FULL) ACCPTH(*YES)

2) SAVSAVFBRM LIB(*ALL) MEDCLS(ULTRIUM5) DEV(TAPMLB01)
MEDPCY(PERMPTC)
SEQNBR(*END) ENDOPT(*REWIND) CLEAR(*SAVF).

Subject: BRMS Question

This is just a general question, since I'm a BRMS neophyte.

Does BRMS support saving libraries to a save file, and then saving the
save file? I'd like to save a library to a save file (thus freeing up
the
library) and then save the save file one or more times to media.
Does this sound like something BRMS supports?

Thanks!
