Think hierarchical storage, tables partitioned by active data vs archived
data, etc.
With that in mind, one can see why unit preference is at the member (aka
partition) level as in this DSPFD

Preferred storage unit . . . . . . . . . : UNIT *ANY

So, when you restore a member into an existing member you're wondering if
you can just restore the data and not the member attributes (except those
marked *NEW)?
Good question.

And, when clearing members in the test library you do have to be aware of
Referential Integrity and all that fun stuff.
