How about having the relay in charge of an "engineer" that believes
nothing has changed in midrange since he left university, in the 90',
and with an anti-spam that has a very high rate of false positives.?

Raul,

I don't believe so. The SMTP settings are mostly "global"..

Our MAILTOOL software will allow this as it allows you to specify the mail
router at a command, user or global level. This comes in handy when a
corporation uses more than one relay (or your situation which is rare).

But I would also say that rarely, if ever, should be be not using a relay.
If you're delivering directly from your IBM i I assume you have it set up
properly with reverse DNS, etc.

If you have relay for your corporation, I would say use it all the time.
It's no different than sending email from a PC in most cases where a mail
relay should be used.

Is it possible to configure the smtp server to use relay only for a
couple of domains and deliver directly to the rest of the world?

I actually deliver directly, but I will like to use the relay for
delivering to a couple of domains.
