There are some darn cool things for consuming a web service with SQL.
About the most perfect example I've seen is IBM's own
systools.Group_Ptf_Currency. This view will look at the PTF groups you
currently have on your system then consume a web service to compare them
with what's the current level of each of those groups is at IBM's web
server.
