The journal should have the necessary fields (job, user, date, time,
etc.) for you to do after-the-fact forensics. That is one of the
purposes of journaling.

So I doubt it's much, if at all, harder to use the journal than the
trigger; plus you get the other journal benefits others have already
mentioned.
