Thank you for the customer perspective, Paul. I agree on every point. My
gut feel is that installation procedures fail more often when they are less
automated. And perhaps even more importantly, how "change" is managed by
the software provider.

Regarding change management, my inclination would be formalize our internal
procedures for handling "release" cut-offs, and "mod" cut-offs - where
"mods" are dependent on "releases", and where "mods" must be applied in
sequence.

After a review of IBM's PTF concepts, I've become more concerned about the
notion of "cumulative" and "superseded" fixes. Those concepts seem
difficult to manage and more prone to failure.

Thankfully, we're not trying to support both IBM i and AIX - only IBM i.
The package does include a small but significant Java component. I admit
that adds a complexity, and is a concern.
