I think you need to clarify what it is you really want. The term
"epoch time" would have been a little confusing without the mention of
Unix, but you added the link at the end which indicates you seem to
mean Unix epoch time.

Then there is the issue that generate_unique has nothing whatsoever to
do with any epoch, Unix or otherwise, and is only coincidentally
related to times of any kind.

So, what are you trying to do, really? I suggest trying not to use
"buzzwordy" terms, but rather explaining-to-a-fifth-grader terms
instead.
