Thank you all for sahring advice/code/thoughts/ideas with me.

As it happend, the method I deemed most "elegant"
(Overlaing a Alphanumeric field over a ineger field ,incrementing the
integer
and looping until getting a "clean" alpha field )
did not work for me - I never got a clean value that had no "unprintables".
So I used Sam_L's piece of code , adapted it to 6 character field and was
done with it.
