<< How many companies outsource to India where the average age developing

Considering the employment market, even one is too many.

Reading the comments, the replies are misleading and tend to imply the IBM_i
only has RPG programmers. Guess this is largely true but I see many shops
interfacing to the web and other client applications basically replacing
display files on the I.

The developers on these applications are in the age group 20 to 40.

They are all content working with the IBM_i in a client host relationship.

I also see our mature developers working with this younger group who manage
the client apps but don't see them as part of their departments. In many
instances, outsourcing has confused what or who make up the developers
today.

How many companies outsource to India where the average age developing RPG
is between 20 and 40.

Heh, he might. He moved from California to Texas several years ago. He's a
collector, and the gun grabbers are part of the reason he moved.

Not surprising given what the current gun control lobby is doing for
sales.
He might just have more fun too, does he need any help?

Thanks to companies who outsource, those pastures aren't so green anymore.
Looking at Jim's figures for IT graduation rates, perhaps the word is
getting out that the money is better in other disciplines.

My oldest son (41) has been a web developer for years, and even had his
own retail web site for a while. He'll be leaving the industry this year.
He's found that he can make better money as a gunsmith.

I can't believe this, but Paul and I actually agree about something! I
base my agreement after training programmers for a company years ago. We
wound up taking recruits out of accounting, warehousing, even (shutter)
sales.
The only problem was the company didn't pay that well so, once they got
trained they usually wound up leaving for greener (i.e., more lucrative)
pastures.

I've always held that it's easier to teach someone with a business degree
to program than it is to teach somebody with a computer science degree how
to produce financial statements and understand inventory control.

Holger,

We are finding on the west coast of the US, California primarily but the
entire coast, is about half the developers working in the tech sector never
went to additional schooling after high school. They get hired on, work
80-90 hours/week and in two years are as productive as 10 year vets in the
industry. What they don't have is the industry and life experiences
needed
to produce applications that are effective in a business environment.
Companies are relying on those of us with some grey hair to provide that
perspective.

Maybe this will help your determination - here in Germany i know of a lot
of IBM i shops where >50% of the developers do not have any grade which is
IT related...
