An idea simple, but maybe not very fast:

Create a DS with a "bigint" (8 bytes) and overlay your 6 chars field
starting in the third byte.

Increment the bigint and %check your field against a list of your valid
characters (0-9, A-Z), you can include lower case.
If checks Ok, you have your next key, else increment and check again.
