I strongly dispute this claim. (Not that it's necessarily yours, but
you've paraphrased in what I believe is stronger language than used by
either Rob or me.)

Why do I like to write my own CSV writer ?

Because in-between the commas of the Comma-Seperated-Values, I can embed labels and formulas like , , ,'Total',=SUM(A1:A11), , ,

Fine. There are some other CSV "tricks" as well, such as a certain
amount of control over numeric formatting.

and because I use the extension .XLS instead of .CSV on my file - - - when the user double-clicks on the file, it opens in Excel.

You shouldn't be using a fake extension for CSVs. Excel opens .csv by
default just as surely as it opens .xls. In fact, spoofing the
extension is actually worse than just being honest about it, because
modern versions of Excel will issue a warning to the user if it
detects an extension mismatch.
