Just trying to verify, but when you said "We established a shared session
at the HMC prior" did you mean physically at the HMC? And not via a
shared session from a hmc console session started at some PC?

If so, yeah, that would be odd that it would drop like that.

There is a way to ensure that your sessions are a little more rock solid.
Read "Enabling console takeover" at
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_72/rzajr/rzajrconsoletakeoverandrecover.htm?lang=en-us
Sure, it talks about Operations Console but it applies to HMC also.

"Whatever the previous console's activity was, the new console is at the
exact same place, even during the process of restarting the system or
installing the IBM i operating system. When the console option for
takeover is enabled, the system also has enhanced recoverability from the
loss of the console."

What negative ramifications, if any, does this cause?
Whenever your console connects for the first time it asks for a SST user
id and password before you get the prompt for the IBM i userid and
password. If you have coworkers who only ever have such need once a
quarter (if that) it can be a little confusing.
