Rob,
for "talking" to the HMC from the IBM lpar there are a variety of ways to accomplish.

- use ssh scripts and pip back to a file to read.
- use Scotts UNIXCMD to get the data back into an RPG pgm
by running the ssh commands in the program
http://www.scottklement.com/unixcmd/

i suppose you are interested in the output of the following:

'lssyscfg -r lpar -m "managed-system'

IBM lab services also has an offering for "lpar toolkit"
which provides for similar(plus more) functionality.

I've got UPS monitoring programs completed for many of the lpars on my
first server.
Working on the "host" lpar of IBM i.
I'd like to query the HMC for the status of the lpars guested by this
host.
I looked at a recent suggestion by Jim Oberholtzer at
http://archive.midrange.com/midrange-l/201504/msg00313.html
but the link to HMC commands is going to Fix Central instead.

I discarded the idea of pinging the guests because TCP could be down but
the lpars may not be powered off yet. And while it's a real hoot to
suspend the disks of an active lpar that's not really my goal here.
