something that is literally impossible, in the sense that 2=7 is
impossible, or something where proportional or nonproportional isn't
really relevant to the fundamental issue (though it just so happens
that nonproportional is easier to calculate).
Why not generate the report as HTML?

I don't even understand what you mean by this. How are XML or JSON relevant?
