I have a lot fewer racks than you but the same issue, especially when it
comes to laptops. Let's see......Mac, Surface, Thinkpad, Dell, etc......

And if you want to learn the hardware you often need a lot to really get
into it enough to be even approach becoming an expert.

equipment. I used to have my back-up uplink in my bathroom through a
hotspot similar to the XFinity sharing thingies, so I had a sealed outdoor
access point hanging above my bath tub on PoE. All my extension cords had
an equal length of cat5e with female sockets piggy-backed on them for use
during the summer.

You need a very tolerant spouse!

This is so true. It helps if you have a spouse with a similar hobby, but
then again, that only doubles the mess. I used to have twinaxial and a
bundle of single mode running around my flat, but after I moved I had to
switch to all copper due to practical concerns.

Something which's also underestimated is the cost of electricity -
especially in urban environments. Operating a model 250 24/7 will cost you
around EUR 20.00 a month in power usage. Newer models yield more
performance per Watt, but ideally you want a "remotely operable" power
switch so you can IPL the machine when you need it. More than 60% of my
energy bill is consumed by my "toys".
