Paul,

On the old machine, IBM i is hosting internal disk. On the new, all disk is external (HDS) hosted by dual VIOSes

Totally agree with Rob.
I had similar issue, back LIC was down level, when I went from P5 to P7.
I dumped the 20,000 page joblog to disk, created a migration log utility, save time on reviewing the messages.

Just curious, how are you creating your 8 P8 LPARs, normal, hosted, or VIOS.

Paul

What you really need first is LIC. And restore OS and userdata from your backup. Make sure you have a new respin of 7.1 with the latest TR on it.
Also order the latest PTF's. Once you install LIC and get your disks configured then complete your restore and apply the latest cume and groups to ensure your OS is happy with that level of LIC.
Or you can upgrade the 'source' OS to current PTF's.

Some people just like this way because it saves you from the outage of formatting disks while doing your migration. You can have your disks all configured beforehand. This could be very significant.

We are moving 8 IBM i 7.1 lpars from a P7 to a new P8 machine. According to IBM, the process to use is SAVE 21 and restore as described in Appendix D 'Recovering your system to a different system' in the 'Recovering your System' manual.

My question relates to the fact that the existing lpars are at TR4 and thus won't run on P8 without at least TR8 applied. I was hoping to avoid having to apply maintenance to all 8 LPARs before moving them. I tried doing an install of 7.1 and all maintenance on the new hardware, then just a Restore 23 userdata but that broke things that was messy to clean up afterwards.

Has anyone attempted anything similar and found an easier way?

Thanks
Dana
