To be honest, I don't think there is much of a case to be made in
terms of higher performance or lower resource usage. As Rob says,
upgrading hardware helps. I'd add that for certain specific cases,
you *might* be able to upgrade software even without upgrading
hardware. If you can migrate to a version of the OS with a better JVM
and query engine, for example, that might get you some meaningful
performance gains.

But otherwise, all the ROI from updating/modernizing comes from either
improved functionality (such as a better user interface), or improved
maintenance and development.
