Vern is talking about the "Performance Data Investigator" that is available
through the IBM Navigator web console. This is the browser-based console,
NOT the client System i Navigator.
You have PDI available to you as it is included with the operating system
with IBM i 6.1 and later.
You will want to look at some of the Collection Services graphs available
with PDI.
For basic resource graphs - CPU, disk performance information, disk
capacity information that were mentioned in the original email, there is a
simple graph that is supplied by IBM called the "Resource Utilization
Overview". It's part of the Collection Services graphs.
To help you get started with PDI, there is an older article on PDI out on
developerWorks -
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/ibmi/library/i-pdi/index.html
It's technically correct, but the screen captures are from a few years ago
and the navigator interface has been improved with the latest PTFs.
This article just scratches the surface of the capabilities of PDI.
There's a draft redbook that was recently published that reviews another
feature of PDI called "Health Indicators". Health Indicators are another
way to get a high-level view of system resources such as CPU, disk,
memory/faulting.
Again, this function is included with the operating system.
http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/pdfs/redp5150.pdf
Please be sure to be current on PTFs - HTTP Group, Java, and the
Performance Tools groups specifically for using PDI. There have been MANY
enhancements and updates in Navigator and PDI over the past couple years
and you will have the best experience if you have the latest PTFs
installed.
If you have the latest PTFs installed and still have problems, please
report issues to IBM via PMRs - IBM can only improve Navigator if problems
are reported.
You should not try to query the PM400 data files - IBM does not document
the contents of these files and the formats are subject to change.

Hi Bon
I was thinking of the web-based Navigator - that's the stated direction
for Navigator - the windows one is not going to be enhanced - not sure
it'll completely go away, though.

Hi Vern,
I tried to use Navigator for i, for similar purposes. Sometimes it
worked, sometimes not, plus there were some CPU consuming Java related
jobs. It is good to know that from V7R2 System i Navigator will
disappear.

Bon

I'm wondering if there is something in the IBM i Navigator browser-based
tools - I'm not involved in the hardware or performance side much these
days, so I'm not sure.
Of course, this all has some dependence on what OS version you're
working with.
