Is there any way to have an application running on the iSeries
generate an SNMP trap error that would be sent to a SNMP monitoring
application (SolarWinds to be specific)? We send a lot of data to
local windows servers using FTP. Sometimes our Windows FTP server
will just stop accepting connections. The server is not down and the
FTP service is running so our monitoring server that sends alerts to
the Windows admins don't get an alert. I was wondering if I could
send an SNMP trap when the iSeries FTP client can't connect to the
Windows FTP server, then the SNMP server could be setup to alert the
Windows admins.

By defining an "Alert", the SNMP trap can be effected as simply as a message being sent; beyond the Action Entry for the Alert having been defined with Generate SNMP Trap (GENTRAP) [via Add Alert Action Entry (ADDALRACNE)], the message identifier would have to be defined with an appropriate Alert Options (ALROPT) setting to make that happen.

GO CMDALR [Alert Commands menu; ALR] GO CMDACN [Action Commands menu; ACN] GO CMDACNE [Action Entry Commands menu; ACNE] and GO CMDFTR [Filter Commands menu; FTR] are helpful for that. Beyond that however, I had included additionally, an old doc reference in the following text quoted from this archived message; I did not verify the link nor where or how to locate that manual using the KnowledgeCenter:
