Sadly in release 6 and prior of the HMC you didn't even need a session at the HMC. As soon as you created a Shared session it held it there for you even if your remote session disconnected. Now what Jim describes is required in order to have a session active at the HMC in case the remote one goes away.

Here's the rub though, now you've got a possible security issue because if you sign on to the system console with a *ALLOBJ authority user and someone walks up to the HMC they can do nefarious things. I know that the HMC is normally behind locked doors so that means something but it's no guaranteed. Also you could do the console lock at the HMC but it shows the user ID and since most of you use hscroot and the password is still abc123(4)...... :-)

I do this all the time Jim. Works great.
Years ago I was trying to initialize disk on a guested partition on a
partition at the office while at COMMON at Dallas. I kept losing
connection. So I had the operator start the local session on the HMC. Now
when I used it shared it kept the initialize going, even when I shut down
my laptop and went to my sessions.
