In last week's Storage Portfolio TopGun they claimed that
Power8 didn't allow IBM i to use internal storage anymore,
only SAN. That sounded wrong since at least Rob had a p8
machine with internal disks, but maybe they want to migrate
everything out of the CEC?

Absolutely false.

There are three different backplanes for disk storage in the new
Power 8 system units. High level description of these are:

First is 0 write cache, no split.

Second is split backplane with 0 write cache to accomodate
multiple LPARs using the disk in the CEC without need for
additional drive bays and controllers.

Third is high function backplace with 7.6GB of write cache and
maximum drive bays.

You may also implement disk IOAs and attach EXP24S disk
enclosures.
