When buffering it is much more efficient to use a varying length field for the buffer.

buffer += %trimr(newrecord);

Then write using %Len(buffer) and %Addr( buffer : *Data )

As Charles said, I can write x bytes, clear, read, write x more bytes, even
beyond the 16Mb Jon mentioned.
Can someone point me to sample code that can append to the stream? The
current code I've always used only writes records that end with CRLF
eval @len = %len(%trimr(@textbig))
callp writeline(fd:%addr(@textbig):@len) (and writeline is part of
Scott's download sample code)

No so in any release from V6 onwards - at V6 the size went up to 16Mb.

Subject: writing large single record stream file

What are the limits of writing a single stream record from RPGLE?
I need to write EDI unwrapped stream file, possible 10 to 100 meg (it's
a monthly file to a government agency). Am using program based on Scott
Klement's IFS samples, currently writing one record per segment, but have
not figured out how to append each segment to a single record, and what the
limits will be. File is much larger than a single field can hold. Looking
for a sample.
