After Iron Mountain once dropped off one of our tapes at some strange
address I can see the need for tape encryption. (Wrong building in the
same complex.)
However tape encryption scares me. If the key is stored in the drive what
do you do if the drive burns up? How do you restore an encrypted tape at
an offsite DR test site? Etc.

On a different tangent from the same OP, Is the 2900 SCSI or fiber? Is
new hardware in your future? We're migrating to Power 8. One fiber card,
hosted by VIOS, virtualized to all lpars of IBM i and AIX. SAN switch set
up for WWPN mapping. No dynamic lpar moving required, etc. If the tape
library has multiple drives you can use more than one at a time. We had
three running at once in this situation and it still ran faster than three
separate tape controllers on a Power 6.
