Somewhere I remember IBM stating that internal disks will always be faster than external.

I have also heard this repeated by several IBMers in the past. At the time it sounded like there was no technical reason for it, mostly a support issue. As in getting someone VIOS (AIX) fluent to talk about disk storage with someone i fluent.
Is this still the case, or have the support issues been ironed out? I attended several VIOS sessions in Austin and it appears that VIOS is getting better all the time so it may become a viable tool for us in the future.

Tangentially, I will say that I was not impressed with trying to host internal disk via VIOS to my lpars of IBM i. The people I talked to suggested that I reserve hosting IBM i disk under vios to only SAN attached storage. And not internal drives.
