We always had all printers as DEVD. Several years ago, there was a goal to monitor all printing. Windows/Linux print servers were setup along with PaperCut software to manage all Windows and iSeries printing, and all iSeries printing was converted from a normal DEVD to DEVD with remote location pointing to a printer server combined with TSPLPRD driver program, which is then conf using SETRMTPQ.
This has been working without issue.

7. Set the remote print queue (SETRMTPQ) as follows:
* From a command line type SETRMTPQ DEVD(MAN_OUTQ1) RMTPRTQ('BRCMANS1320') , then press ENTER.
* Note RMTPRTQ must equal share name on print server, exactly.

When production system was the i, I found that using a DEVD was more reliable. We had a bunch of Lexmark printers. Most also had scanner heads and other attachments. When configured as remote output queues, we had unpredictable data loss. The printers did not have internal storage, so the print stream just disappeared. Things got a bit ugly, as orders for patient care disappeared. Not a good thing at a hospital. Most printer DEVDs were created to use PJL. But, that was related to what the printer supported.
