Wasn't there some GUI part of lan console that used to emulate pushing the
white button on the front, and stuff like that?

Except ASMI isn't available. It _used_ to be available, but I get
"Error code: ssl_error_no_cypher_overlap"
because (I assume) the ssl it's using is too old for the current version
of
Firefox. I did everything at this page:
http://stevehuston.wordpress.com/2011/01/13/read-and-follow-all-directions-carefully-and-firefox-ssl-settings-for-accessing-ibm-pseries-asmi-via-https/
which helped for a couple of months, but, alas, that too ultimately failed
as Firefox kept updating.

On that subject, with LAN console and ASMI access you can basically doshould
all you could do with an HMC (single-partition systems only, of
course), one of the drawbacks i've seen with Lan Console is that you
don't get all the low level SRCs (but you can go into the ASMI and get
a live panel read)...
So, if you've got >Power5 hard and you use Lan Console, get an ASMI
connection as well. That saturday when you send PWRDWNSYS *IMMED but
forget the Restart *YES, you'll love having the ASMI avaiable.

Regarding Operations Console ("OC") and LAN Console ("LC"):
I used to have OC as I was one of those who believed the console

I followed some advice from here (forget if it was Pete or Larry). I
actually put a 2nd ethernet card in each of 2 PCs here, used an old
switch, and I have LC available on 2 PCs on an entirely separate

pretty short order. And LC is way way better than OC. Much quicker

The only system consoles available on a Power 7 are:

Buzz, your LAN console connection is what you want to use. You can
up a 5250 console session on it and it should default to running in
lowcontrolling subsystem. This session should continue to run even in
restricted state. Yes, it does amaze me how IBM can get just enough
fulllevel TCP running to support Lan Console and not restrict a rclstg,

The difference between Operations Console and Lan Console was that
Yes,Lan Console was on your Lan. And you could have more than one (as a

Operations Console has been discontinued.

Sorry but there's some miscommunication here.

Rob,
Sorry about the mix up, we don't have a thin console connection but
aand
LAN connection. But I did check in the hardware information center
laterfound
this:
"Use the Thin Console on the following models: 9405-520, 9406-520,
9406-525,
9406-550, and 9407-515. These models must be running i5/OS V5R3 or
administrationand
a firmware level or SF240 or later."
However, I really like the flexibility afforded with that sort of
connectivity; I'll even tunnel in from home and do system
mailing(thankstasks. Heck, even using Access Client Solutions on a Win 8 laptop
Tim!).
