Rich - You're right about automating image catalog stuff should be pretty easy - there's a nice set of related commands - you know, bundle up the various parameters and ba-da-bing!

You have to remember I'm just a lowly 3rd party IBM i software vendor who likes .Net :-)

We do system backups periodically to tape and simply back up our development libraries regularly to save files.

Does what we need for the most part.

I do like the idea of being able to back up all my libs to a single image plus appending just like a tape.

Mainly I wanted to validate the benefits of the virtual tapes before I write my own utility wrapper around it to provide some simple Virtual Tape to NAS functionality for backups unless someone else has written something ? :-)

Seems like a lot of manual steps to set up an image catalog and manage it that can be automated simply.

Thanks :-)

Richard Richard Richard..... (Head shaking)

You can't be serious about Save Files being even close to virtual tape
in functionality!?

Virtual tape:
a) Multiple libraries per tape
b) Multiple file systems per tape
c) Multi-volume support meaning unlimited size (OK OK up to size of
disk...)
d) Can begin copying volumes off as they fill instead of waiting for
completion.
e) Exists in IFS so writes are quicker.
f) Can be flagged to 'not save' so they don't compound save size.

Save Files:
None of that. :-)

Jeff,

Are you thinking of using them for virtual tape backups ?

I'm still trying to determine the value over saving and FTPing save files.
