Keys are tied to Serial Number, Serial Number is stored, among other thing
like VET codes, in the VPD card. You might fry a PSU, you might fry a VRM
you might even fry a full backplane but as long as that VPD card is OK, you
can always restore the machine.
I've had to replace 3 520 backplanes, one power5 and one power5+ and in
once case i had to replace it 2 times, once about 2 years ago and one a few
months back, same machine. I just moved the VPD card to the new chassis and
off we go.
Then again if you lose the machine in a fire or something like that i'm not
sure you can re-program a virgin VPD with your info i tried that one time
and i failed but i didn't know half of what i know now...

Best Regards,

I wonder. If I got a maintenance contract renewal in January, would they

Just curious, but IBM doesn't give new keys for V5R4, right? Since end of
marketing was a LONG time ago and end of support is 2013-09-30.
So if you fry your V5R4 box and need a replacement are you SOL?
