In the middle of coding a program to pre-process date, time, and
timestamp input (or rather, to develop and test RPG functions to
pre-process them), it suddenly occurred to me:
In RPG and DDS, and probably in a lot of other IBM-centric areas, the
one-letter data-type code for a timestamp is "Z"
In German and related languages (probably including some romanizations
of Yiddish), "Z" always has a TS sound.
Z = TS
Z = TimeStamp
I wonder if the individual who first decided that Z would be the code
for timestamp actually realized that he/she was creating a multi-lingual
pun . . .
