Thank you. A common situation is where the boss starts out with the
minimum number of drives (or less) figuring he can expense the newer
drives in as time goes by. And (taken to the extreme) you end up with a
15 drive raid set with striping only on two drives.
- Only use a 3 drive raid set if the expense of that 4th drive is a deal
breaker. Sure, the thought of running at 20% of capacity may drive some
people nuts. But you're doing it for performance, not to get the space.
- If you're going to exceed 7 drives in the near future then try to start
out fresh with 8 or more drives. Striping spread across 8 drives should
outperform striping only spread out across 4 drives everytime.
