You can take the generated xml and run it against a tool to verify if "well formed". This will let you know if missing tags, typos, etc.
Since a lot of the free sites really want to sell, I've used w3schools.com xml validator (free).
For giant xml - we had some that were many gig we did find a tool that did not blow up (you need a pc that has enough memory to load entire xml file to memory), our .net guys found easy sample code to use python and the expat handler.
And finally, an editor that can handle giant files, the 010 Editor. Most other tools blow after about 5 gig.

You are correct. I found the typo. So many <> and /% %/ one set got mucked up. It now works beautifully.
