I am totally for users creating their own reports. Those who lock it down
so tight that only IT can do it usually get their software replaced
because it gets the blame for being inflexible when it was really the IT
department.
I will agree that many developers are right that if they let users create
their reports that they'll just screw it up. A simple example is snagging
material that is 'oh hand' yet ignoring that it's allocated to a different
customer's order going out tomorrow. However, fighting the users
generating their own reports will get you cold cocked.
My big thing is create the right views. Make it easier for the users to
generate their own reports. Have the appropriate files joined together.
Rename the fields to meaningful names. Do the math for stuff like:
select openingbalance+receipts-issues+adjustments as onhand,...
so the users don't have to do that in every report they use.
