ABSOLUTELY test this because if you don't you don't have a backup!!

As I mentioned VERY early in the thread the use of the free software IMGBURN is recommended by myself AND IBM for burning these images. Previous to that software I had several instances where my PC would read the disk AND I could stick it into the optical drive on the server and see it under /QOPT, BUT IT WOULD NOT IPL from the disk. You REALLY need to attempt a manual IPL from disk one to PROVE the thing is usable.

You can create a new partition with minimum CPU 1G Memory and no disks or LAN at all, just D M IPL from the disk and if it gets to any IBM i screen at all you're good.

how about put it in the optical drive on the IBM i? Go to /QOPT in the
FS? Put a 5 on it? And an 8 to see properties?

Here is what I do..
1) Transfer SS01 to the PC (whatever method your prefer, if ftp use binary)
) Rename SS01 TO SS01.ISO (most all burning software will recognize ISO as a
d/dvd image)
) Burn to media with using your favorite burning software.
Hope this helps,
onty

i Folks, I'll try one more time on this one...if anyone can gimme the info I'd
ppreciate it. How do I get the /savsys dir to the DVD on my PC in the proper
ormat for use in case I have to recover using the DVD? Also, for the folks
ho've done what I'm trying to do...is the STMF on your DVD's the same as what
'm showing, QIMGCLG?

Hi Larry/Rob, thanks for the info. So, dragging and dropping to my CD drive
n
y PC is no good...must I use that free software? Is that the only option? I
now I can use FTP but my main concern is saving it to the CD on my PC (I have
VD's) just in case it's needed (knock wood). I'm not ftp'ing the directory to
nother server but replicating a savf of it to our HA box but my confusion is
ow do I get the savsys data on a CD in the proper format. Do you folks know
ow to accomplish that? Here's the contents of the dir...is this correct and
ust i save both STMF's?
our info is greatly appreciate and thanks, Frank

ou may certainly transfer the images to your PC with any method that
rks. Personally I use FTP (Binary mode please!) but that's just me.
nce on your PC if you want to make use of them to restore the system
u'll of course need to burn them to plastic. To do that use ImgBurn
free) as that seems to be the only one that consistently creates
otable DVDs from image catalog media.
f your systems were newer you could also make them available via NFS
om another server but you cannot do that on an iSeries, it has to be a
wer System with IBM i 7.1 for that to be available.

Tom,
Interesting; some see the >grey< issue and some don't.
Seems counter-productive to omit a filter just when it would be most useful ?
Anybody here from the IBM i team ?

Gary-
I also do not have any "include" option on the list of tables in a schema (the
nclude or F11 option is greyed out). I assumed it was due to the fact that
he
able list is not all there in local memory (which seems to be why it takes
orever to scroll).

any other JDBC interfaces I have used are able to give me the list of table
ery fast.

Rob, two locations:
n the left pane expand Databases, select a Database, expand Schemas,
expand SchemaX, right-click Tables, click Customize this view
which opens sub-menu with four options, 2nd of which is
"Include... F11" >grey<
Also, with Tables selected as described above,
click View on Sys i Nav menu bar, click Customize this view,
"Include... F11" >grey<
Thanks!

What were you clicked on in the left when you tried that? It gets greyed out
hen you are clicked on stuff you can't customize.
rilling down...
yIBMi - grey. This is not how you choose to show just "Basic Operations"
r "Work Management"
atabases - grey. Doesn't allow you to choose just to show the local database
s any you defined in WRKRDBDIRE.
yIBMi again - grey. Doesn't allow you to choose between "Schemas", "Database
aintenance", etc Schemas - not grey. Can choose which schemas (libraries) to
isplay.
chema (library) name - grey. Cannot choose to show "All Objects", "Aliases",
Constraints", etc Tables - not grey. Pick and choose what tables you want to
how.
licking on any table in the right - not grey

My profile has *ALLOBJ,*IOSYSCFG,bla, bla - so I asked Sys Admin and he says he

At Schemas in the Left Pane, I have a Databases tasks = "Select

nothing at a lower level has caught my eye . . .
Databases > Schemas > Tables
ight click Tables or press F11
n the General tab, select the radio button for 'Names that match'.

As an aside, I'm not really a GUI person. I like that completely empty green

:-) I've found a plethora of very cool actions by right clicking pretty much
