Just talking about SQL Servers Linked Database. Just go to servers and add
a new linked server. Search the archives for how to setup.

This means that you are pulling data from the iSeries. You have to write a
stored procedure or C# or VB.Net to pull the data. This doesn't work if you
want to have data pushed from iSeries. If you know what data you need then
a linked server will work. If you have a lot of data to move, may not be
fast enough.

How much data are you moving and are you requiring real time or near real
time updates?

In addition, about seven-eight years ago I defined a "linked database"
directly from MS SQL Server to
DB2 on what was then an iSeries to directly query the data I needed. I
would think such a link is
still as easy as it was then.

Use scott's jdbc service program to update directly. Map an ifs folder
and
generate text files for large updates.

HI We are looking at a new help desk software product and for
reporting purpose we would like to access our Manufacturing system
data which is AS/400.
We are considering ways of sending the data over to the SQL Server. One
idea we have is to use SSIS.

Can you speak of your experience using either SSIS or other way to
make this data available onto the SQL Server; both real time or batch
mode. I do think we will need fairly real time, but all options are on
the table.
