"key_type_from_name: unknown key type" messages: they're red-herrings.
Your ssh client has found a key file to use: id_rsa.
At this stage it's waiting for a protocol version string from the server
that obviously isn't arriving. Not enough info there to be any more
helpful.

I have requested a network packet trace but otherwise the only additional
information is a snapshot of the invocation stack at point of failure.
Also, port is non-standard 2222 at vendor's request but seems that initial
connection was okay anyway.
