I am quite sure that nobody, now in 2013, is still using alerts in 
their SNA behavior (sphere of control, primary and backup focal points, 
and so on ...). However, alerts are still an interesting feature to 
capture events. Remember that the system creates an alert each time a 
message queue defined to accept alerts, receives a message with a 
message description properly set to create alerts. Through an alert 
filter you can request the system to send, for each or a selection of 
alerts, an entry to a data-queue (and write your own tool to handle 
this data-queue) or to create an snmp trap for example.
