Dr Franken, In GM's case it might be because it's a physical, tangible
thing that went out of production. But if the customer isnt asking for
maintenance, they could at least quote a big enough number to make sure
they either upgrade or pay for the hassle of finding the keygen for that
release...
I've been there myself with some clients, tied to software whose ISV might
not even exist anymore, tied to some old release, but needing to upgrade.
At least here (Argentina), imported goods are harder to get daily (harder,
not impossible). IBM itself is laying off people, relying on the BP's to do
THEIR hardware work and the like. Not to mention that at an unofficial
change rate of 8 pesos for 1 US dollar (got up to 10 a few months back) and
the official channels all but closed, IBM's price on POWER hardware are not
so competitive, you might understand where the used market comes from. At
least here.
I have a client that comes on monday for one of the old 800's i have in my
lab. I think it's a small ISV and finally needs to upgrade (upgrade? the
800 is running v5r2!)
I would love for POWER systems to get some more tiers for the entry level
or small work/dev work. (i know a 720 is dirt cheap, on US dollars). But i
know that catering to the extremely low level can hurt the platform (hell,
the 9407-M15 i have has less than half it's backplane populated, only 1
proc, only 4 ram sticks, and it goes on).

I think i went of the tangent...
Best Regards,

No matter how much we begged and pleaded IBM would not sell us some V5R2
licenses. So we cant run BRMS, for example.
