Paul,
I cut my teeth when Power5 came out so that is my reference point.
We have multiple P7 740s and 720s and the rest are larger P5/6 frames. I haven't noticed any abnormal HW issues in the P7. My only pain point has been a couple times when the IOPless disk controller firmware acts up and causes false HW messages and/or mirroring issues. In both cases we resolved the issue with PTFs.

Subject: Power7 Hardware reliability
Looking for feedback on Power7 hardware reliability.
We are on a P7 8205-E6C for one year.
Replacing the VPD card for a 2nd time, requires new codes, process is a bit tedious. (Not hot swappable) Motherboard or backplane was replaced this past March, this was scary, every component swapped out and in.
Performance is great, but never had hardware issues like this on Power5 or previous hardware.
Thank You
